I’m here to help inspire you to create a healthy home.

Hello! I’m Aimee Guess, and welcome to Homemaker On A Budget, where you’ll find fresh, clean, and inspiring recipes to help you create delicious meals at home, without breaking the bank. Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly, non-toxic living tips or seeking hope and healing through natural wellness, this is a place to refresh your kitchen and life as the home economist.

Introducing my new Book

The Ultimate Kitchen Guide

to food storage, freezer rotation, & zero food waste

Take back your kitchen’s purpose and reformulate the way you manage your kitchen. If you have an unorganized pantry, food going bad in your refrigerator, and you have no idea what’s at the bottom of your freezer, then let me help you create unity and purpose when grocery shopping and planning. We want to fill your freezer with foods that will help on those busy nights, to keep you from eating out and overspending.

  • Don’t use those silicone ground meat spatulas either! None of it is good for you. Now yes, I freeze in silicone, use silicone spatulas to mix batters, but I do not cook/heat with them!

Comment AMAZON and I’ll send you the link to my favorite bakeware/cookware! Going non-toxic is overwhelming, but purchase just one new item a month if that helps you with your budget. For instance, I replaced my silicone loaf pans with glass loaf pans. I absolutely love them and I’m so glad I made the switch.

Why is silicone toxic? Well, that’s a difficult question to answer because the internet only wants to tell you it’s safe…. But I found information that you might want to check out on your own. In hindsight “When used at temperatures above 200° F silicone cookware releases VOCs into your air and siloxanes into your food.” I highly suggest digging deeper at nontoxicforhealth.com. It’s an interesting topic, but one thing is for sure. I won’t be using silicone bakeware anymore ❤️ Stick with natural. It’s safer for sure!

A little raw honey also has antioxidants!

Want an easy granola recipe? I have one! Comment OATS and I’ll send it to you!
  • I beat stage 3 cancer, and I want to keep it that way!

There are certain foods I aim to eat everyday, and it’s easier to achieve that goal when I plan out what I’m going to eat.

If you like making lists and crossing things off, this method will most likely work for you beautifully!

Here’s an example of my list:

Matcha, Everyday Dose coffee, electrolytes, sparking water, healing leaves tea

B- yogurt parfait with berries and walnuts, 2 hard boiled eggs

L- 1 cup of salsa red lentils, 1 small apple, 1 slice of cheese

Treat- afternoon coffee (mentioned above) with 1 square of dark chocolate

D- salad with shredded carrots and beets (lemon vinaigrette) with grilled chicken or meatloaf

Optional: if I’m feeling super hungry have a slice of toast with butter or nut butter (has never happened)

I literally feel so satiated throughout the day. I’m NEVER feeling deprived. I stick to my list and know I’m doing good for my body. Some days I juice or drink a smoothie, some days I don’t, but by making these lists, I’m able to look over the course of the week and learn what I’ve eaten and what I should probably include for the next day. Often times I will notice that I need to eat more fatty fish like sardines or salmon. These are not proteins that speak to me daily, but having the lists there to look over, I notice what I need to be eating more of.

Comment SWAPS for my free article on non-toxic home swaps! Plus, if you’re walking through cancer or any other healing journey, I have various cancer journey articles on my website.

Comment MATCHA for my favorite brand. Comment FRUIT for the fruit leafs I use for healing tea.

  • Don’t get me wrong, I love my protein and fiber 😂 but my food list for the day is built around the best polyphenols as a cancer survivor!

Top 10 foods rich in polyphenols:

1. Matcha (green tea powder) 🍵
One of the highest known sources of polyphenols, especially EGCG, which is heavily studied for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. You consume the whole leaf, not just a steep.

2. Dark Berries 🫐
Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, elderberries
Packed with anthocyanins that protect DNA, reduce oxidative stress, and support gut bacteria.

3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil 🫒
Rich in oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, both linked to reduced cancer risk and inflammation. This is why Mediterranean diets shine.

4. Dark Chocolate / Raw Cacao (85–100%) 🍫
High in flavanols that protect cells and improve blood flow. The darker and less processed, the better.

5. Fruit Leaf Tea 🌿
Fig leaf, mulberry leaf, guava leaf, citrus leaf
Often higher in polyphenols than the fruit itself. Leaves exist to protect the plant, and they pass that protection on.

6. Cloves (and strong spices) 🌰
Cloves are one of the highest polyphenol foods per gram on earth. Cinnamon, oregano, and turmeric follow closely.

7. Walnuts 🌰
Contain unique ellagitannins, which convert in the gut to compounds linked with cancer-protective effects.

8. Pomegranate ❤️
(I buy frozen)
Loaded with punicalagins, extremely potent polyphenols that support cellular repair and detox pathways.

9. Legumes 🫘
Lentils, soy, and black beans
High in phenolic acids and fiber.

10. Fresh Herbs 🌱
Oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage
Small amounts, huge impact. Herbs are concentrated plant defense compounds.

Polyphenols have been shown to:
•Protect DNA from oxidative damage
•Help damaged cells self-destruct instead of mutating
•Reduce chronic inflammation (a major driver of cancer)

This is why foods like berries, matcha, olive oil, herbs, and fruit leaf teas keep showing up in research.

  • I’ll be honest, I hate the taste of number 1 😝 but I grew them myself and ate them. I do eat these foods (2-6) every week, mostly daily, and I feel great!

1. Broccoli sprouts (sulforaphane powerhouse)
2. Matcha (EGCG + detox + cellular protection)
3. Wild blueberries (anthocyanins)
4. Crushed garlic (allicin activation)
5. Mushrooms (immune-modulating beta-glucans)
6. Wild salmon (omega-3 anti-inflammatory support)
7. Freshly ground flaxseed (lignans + hormone balance)

Just remember, these are not miracle cures, but they are nutrient-dense, research-backed, and supportive of cellular health. Small daily choices add up over time, and this is one way I choose to care for my body moving forward.

Save this for your next grocery trip 🤍

  • I will never eat pork again after beating cancer, here’s why!

Think twice about pasture-raised pork! While it’s a healthier choice than conventional or processed pork, many cancer survivors, including myself, still steer clear due to:

• Research linking pork (especially bacon) to cancer risk
• Potential inflammation from even high-quality pork compared to leaner proteins rich in omega-3s
• Higher risk of parasites in pork!

I healed from stage 3 cancer, and I am very picky with what I eat. I stay away from pork and shell fish. It’s not hard to do when you focus on all the wonderful healthy foods God’s given us.

This was not a hard decision for me! I gave up bacon a long time ago, and I am happy with my protein choices!

What are your thoughts on pork? Should cancer survivors be eating it?

Comment SAUSAGE for my favorite Turkey Italian Sausage recipe! So delicious with different variations.
