Welcome to Homemaker On A Budget

Hi friends, my name is Aimee and I am so glad that you have found my blog! Homemaker On A Budget is a tool that you can use to help your family stick to a grocery budget, eat healthy, and learn new techniques to make the process easy. Through my cancer journey, I prioritize living a non-toxic lifestyle on a budget. Keep reading to learn more details.

When my husband and I first got married we moved out of state for him to work on his graduate degree, which left me bringing in the bulk of the income. Just getting by, I began talking to other women in my similar circumstance and learning how to coupon and shop the grocery ads. I also started researching deal websites for help.

Later on in our marriage, when the economy tanked, we found ourselves in a similar situation and now with a mortgage payment. We were a family of three and I needed to act fast to make sure all our bills were paid. I put us on a strict grocery budget of only $30 a week to get us through the summer with high utility bills, and I taught myself how to still eat healthy on a budget. I didn’t want to just sit around eating processed foods and feeling like a failure, especially since I had a daughter to care for.

This girl’s on a budget!

This led me to where I am today. We are now a family of 6 and on the Dave Ramsey Baby Step Plan. Using my methods we are consumer debt free, and working towards building wealth. We work really hard to save our money, and in doing so I have slashed our grocery budget again, only this time it’s easier because this system that I’ve worked so hard to achieve actually works! We are able to easily feed our family healthy nutritious meals on a budget, even with dietary restrictions.

The cancer diagnosis no body wants to receive

On December 22, 2023 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It came as a total shock to our family. I ate such a healthy whole foods plant based diet. My husband and I were gluten-free for 7 years, however we are both now able to tolerate sourdough bread. Due to several auto-immune symptoms that I experienced over the past few years I changed my diet to a whole food plant-based way of eating. After my cancer diagnosis I began to do research like crazy. I realized that my wasn’t focusing on the bigger picture.

There are 8 laws of health, and I was only focused on nutrition.

The 8 Laws of Health (also called the NEW START principles) are based on natural health and wellness practices that promote a healthy lifestyle. They are:

  1. Nutrition – Eat a balanced diet rich in whole, plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. Avoid processed foods and excessive sugar.

  2. Exercise – Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, running, swimming, or strength training, to maintain overall fitness and cardiovascular health.

  3. Water – Drink plenty of pure water daily to aid digestion, circulation, and detoxification. Proper hydration is essential for overall health.

  4. Sunlight – Get adequate exposure to natural sunlight for vitamin D production and overall well-being, while avoiding excessive exposure that may cause skin damage.

  5. Temperance – Practice moderation in all things, avoiding harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and drugs.

  6. Air – Breathe fresh air regularly. Spend time outdoors in nature and ensure good indoor ventilation to maintain healthy lung function.

  7. Rest – Prioritize proper sleep (7-9 hours per night) and regular rest periods to allow the body to repair and rejuvenate.

  8. Trust in God (or a Positive Mindset) – Maintain a strong faith, spiritual connection, or positive mental outlook to reduce stress and improve emotional well-being.

I quickly cleaned house and drastically changed our lives. I teach you all about that here on my blog. You will see many recipes that are plant-based, but now I just focus on real foods that include high-quality animal products. I underwent 6 months of chemotherapy and am CANCER FREE! I absolutely feel amazing now and am thriving. I share more of my cancer journey under the tab “Cancer Journey.” Feel free to search the website for a variety of topics and recipes.

My hope is that you encompass these 8 laws of health into your everyday life on a budget. The common goal that you will see on this blog is to focus on a real whole foods diet in an economical way.

I hope you will allow me to teach you what I’ve learned, so that your family can eat healthy and spend less. Through any health journey you can thrive, let me show you how.
