When I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I was shocked. I lived a very healthy life, ate super clean (whole food plant-based diet – NO CHEATING), and I still got sick with cancer. Our lymph nodes are the garbage cans in our bodies. As our body weeds out the filth, that filth gets stored in our lymph nodes to then be flushed out.

Knowing that our homes already contain much dirtier air than the outside, I knew I had to clean up our home and make it as non-toxic as I could.

The number 1 hormone disruptor in our homes is fragrances. Fragrances are filled with hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are untested for their safety to breathe in. These fragrances get trapped in our homes, and our bodies can’t keep up with the overwhelming toxins. That’s why I’m here to help you find the best non-toxic home products. • 1 cup vinegar
• 1 cup water
• 2 drops dish soap
• 15-20 drops of essential oils – lemon or lavender

2. Laundry Detergent, Softeners, and Dryer Sheets

3. Candles and Air Fresheners

The chemicals in artificial fragrances are linked to hormone disruption and headaches. We can stop this immediately just by switching to different brands. There are plenty of cozy and comforting ways to give our homes a fresh scent in a non-toxic way. Just remember, soy candles are not non-toxic. They are often laced with harmful paraffin and not disclosed to the customer. Look for beeswax candles, which actually clean the air instead of polluting it.

Non-Toxic Air Freshener Alternatives

Simmer Pots are a wonderful way to add aroma to a home without spending a bunch of money. Freeze apple cores, orange peels, and purchase cinnamon sticks in bulk from Costco or Sam’s Club. This combination makes a wonderful simmer pot, but fresh herbs are also a nice addition.

Essential Oil diffusers are wonderful year-round, and we have access to so many suggestions now on the internet for the best combinations. Here are a few of our favorites:

• 2 drops vanilla
• 3 drops Bergamot
• 1 drop lemon eucalyptus
• 1 drop bay

• 1 drop thyme
• 4 drops tangerine
• 2 drops tea tree

• 4 drops lemon
• 3 drops peppermint
• 1 drop sage

My favorite brand of essential oils is Plant Therapy. Their prices set them apart from the rest. They are so high quality and actually affordable! Most of their oils can be purchased organic, which is very important to me. Most brands cannot do that. They can also be purchased through Amazon, which makes it very convenient for me to order.

Hand Soap is something we all use, so finding a non-toxic, affordable option is high on my priority list. I purchase from Azure Standard many times per year, and we love their hand soap in bulk. The price can’t be beat, and it’s non-toxic.

Other brands that are considered low-toxic because, though not perfect because of fragrances, they are better than most: Simple Truth, 365 Whole Foods Market, and Mrs. Meyer’s.

A common question I am asked on social media is what deodorant I recommend. I have a favorite, and you’ve probably never heard of it. Back in high school, my best friend introduced me to this deodorant, and I loved it so much that my mom also started using it, as well as my grandma. There were a few years where we couldn’t find it, but now it’s back. It does not contain TEA (yes, it shows that it does on Amazon, but it does not. It’s an old image), and it’s very clean.

Anytime I shower, especially when shaving my legs, I use body oil. It’s much more nourishing to the skin because it contains healthy oils the skin needs to replenish. Body lotion, though I love it, is water-based and can actually dry out wet skin. I use body lotion in between showers, but not when I’m freshly clean out of the shower.
