What is Homemade Vaseline?
Homemade Vaseline is simply a natural beeswax salve. Combined with a natural carrier oil, the properties of these ingredients alone create a soothing balm for your dry skin and minor skin irritations. Add beeswax to a natural carrier oil (such as olive, coconut, or almond), and you will have a non-toxic solution to chapped lips, cracked heels, or chaffed skin. Have dry hands or cuticles? Try my homemade Vaseline. Need deep under-eye moisture? Try my homemade Vaseline. Do your kids get minor cuts or skin irritations? Try my homemade Vaseline. There are so many uses!

Why I Ditched Traditional Vaseline
As a cancer survivor, one of my main goals is to make my life, my family’s life, and our home non-toxic. One of the best ways to do that is to review the products used most often and see if there is a healthier or more natural alternative. Traditional vaseline is made with petroleum jelly, a byproduct of petroleum oil. I don’t know about you, but I did not want that touching our skin! A homemade vaseline would contain no fillers, fragrances, or unnecessary ingredients. I didn’t feel good about using traditional petroleum jelly long-term on myself or my loved ones, but I do feel good about providing us with a natural alternative that will offer long-lasting support!

Benefits of Beeswax and Olive Oil
If you’re not familiar with beeswax, you may not realize it’s actually in many high-quality products, from candles to organic lip balms. The problem is that products with real beeswax can get pricey. For a fraction of the cost, I can make my own balms and salves with two simple (and affordable) ingredients: beeswax and olive oil. However, the main reason I turn to beeswax is for its antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. It’s also great for locking in moisture and soothing cracked skin. With all the vitamins that it offers, specifically vitamin A, those wrinkles are kept at bay! These features make beeswax ideal for lip balms, salves, and deep moisturizers.

Olive oil is another wonderful, clean ingredient to have on hand. If you love to cook, I recommend using a high-quality, minimally-sourced, extra virgin olive oil. It’s also great for skin health, as its antioxidants protect skin from UV damage and inflammation. Olive oil holds a host of fantastic vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, which helps prevent aging. Whether you ingest it or lather up with it, you will reap the rewards!

How to Make Homemade Vaseline
With only two active ingredients, it doesn’t get any easier than this! Melt 1/4 cup of beeswax in a double boiler first, then add 1 cup of olive oil. I use a Pyrex glass mixing bowl. Once they’re fully incorporated and melted, pour into your desired glass jars. Allow time to cool and solidify before using. I like to make one for myself and gift one to someone else, specifically my Mom! You could double or triple this recipe around the holidays and gift these to a friend or hostess.
Pro tip: Buy the highest quality beeswax pellets and olive oil you can afford.

Customizing Your Balm
I begin with plain vaseline, and generally I prefer it that way. However, if I want to add an essential oil, then I will add a few drops during application. You can add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) to a jar. Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Lavender are great additions. You may also try playing around with fresh herbs or spices for added fragrance.
The ratio of olive oil to beeswax suits my texture preference, but this is also something you could experiment with!

Shelf Life and Storage
Homemade Vaseline is good for at least 6 months if not longer. Store in a cool, dry place, in jars with tight-fitting lids. Keep homemade Vaseline handy in the bathroom, kitchen, on your bedside table, or in your office. When traveling, consider spooning a portion out into a smaller container to pack in your luggage. If you want to jazz these up to use as gifts, add a fun ribbon around the neck of the jar or a handwritten label on the lid.
