My family loves eating hibachi food, but we don’t always love the cost. Taking a family of six out to eat anywhere can be expensive, never mind a place where you also get front row seats to a show with your dinner! Hibachi refers to a performative style of Japanese cooking, where chefs cook on a large griddle in front of hungry guests. It’s a neat experience, but my husband suggested we try it out at home. So that’s what we did! I prepped the ingredients, and he fired up the grill. What we discovered is that our Hibachi food rivals any restaurant version we’ve tried. Plus, at home, we control the ingredients and get to have the fun cooking together!

Perfect Hibachi Recipe at Home, Everytime!
To create the perfect Hibachi recipe(s) at home, use great quality ingredients every time you make this dish! When it comes to meat, I prefer organic chicken breast or a good cut of beef, like the top sirloin I buy from my local butcher. You can have the butcher cut the steak for you, but I like cutting mine into big chunks when I get home. I marinate my chicken and steak with the Fresh Market brand garlic sesame sauce. It’s incredibly delicious and clean. Otherwise, I love making the rest of the sauces homemade. Everything tastes better when it’s homemade. Using a combination of bottled condiments and fresh ingredients, you can create amazing sauces that carry all those bold, familiar, restaurant flavors you love and crave.

If you’re looking for a healthier gourmet soy sauce, I recommend using San-J brand. I love the taste! It’s naturally gluten-free and lower in sodium. I highly recommend!

What Ingredients Do I Need for Hibachi at Home?
Look no further! I’ve listed ALL the ingredients you’ll need for this delicious dish at home below. If it’s been a while since you’ve made Hibachi or an Asian stir-fry dish at home, here’s a tip: check your condiments for expiry. Be sure to stock up on fresh and up-to-date ingredients!
The Best Hibachi Yum Yum Sauce
One of my favorite parts of hibachi, besides the fireball onion, is when they bring you that delicious side of Yum Yum sauce as a finishing touch. Cue mouth-watering, yum yum! Creamy, pinkish-white, with a tangy sweetness, it’s one of my favorite parts of the meal! I do NOT recommend buying store-bought Yum Yum sauce for hibachi at home; make my recipe instead! If you want your meal to taste like takeout from your favorite Japanese steakhouse, then don’t skimp on this part. Homemade Yum Yum sauce might just be the MVP of this recipe.
The sauce comes together easily. Just grab your favorite brand of mayo, ketchup, sriracha, honey, rice vinegar, a few spices, and that’s about it! My recipe calls for mirin, a Japanese rice wine, but sake can be substituted. The recipe calls for a small amount, making this ingredient optional; however if you have it or can find it, go for it! Whisk everything together and voila! The best homemade Yum Yum sauce. Make sure you drizzle over EVERYTHING!

Classic Hibachi Ginger Dipping Sauce
The next sauce you definitely want as part of your Hibachi meal at home is a classic ginger dipping sauce. This one is so easy to make. Grab a blender or food processor, and a few ingredients, and you’re good to go! You’ll need onions, fresh ginger, garlic cloves, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and a pinch of salt. The secret to great ginger sauce is fresh, crisp ginger and whole pungent garlic cloves. Once blended, it’s ready to be the perfect dipping side for your main meal.
Pro tip: Make the Yum Yum sauce first, and store it in the refrigerator. You can also make the ginger sauce in advance. This really allows all the flavors to come together. These can be made up to two days in advance.

Almost Time to Grill, or Hibachi!
Now comes the fun part! Chop those vegetables up however you like; I like mine chopped into large chunks. When making this recipe for my family, we used zucchini, bell peppers, and onions. You could experiment with other types of vegetables, such as broccoli, mushrooms, or snap peas. Fire up the griddle (or ask your husband to), and gather up all the ingredients you prepped: marinated meat, rice, vegetables, and some eggs!

My husband loves to grill, so here he is, our chef, cooking up our hibachi dinner. You may have room for everything on the Blacktop, or you may need to work in batches. Start by cooking 3 eggs, scramble them, and right before you think they’re done, add the rice and vegetables. Pour on the rice sauce. Cook for a few minutes, then plate it in a dish and start cooking the vegetables. Lastly, cook the meat.

We bought our knock-off brand griddle from Sam’s Club on clearance, but the Blackstone gets great reviews! You can find it on Amazon HERE.
How to Get Hibachi Taste at Home?
Try this recipe! We love our hibachi at home experience! We may never go back to eating hibachi out again. The meat turns out flavorful and tender, the vegetables are perfectly charred and crisp, and the umami-packed rice is the real deal. Not to mention the homemade Yum Yum sauce and garlicky ginger sauce to top it off are out of this world! I highly recommend sharing this meal with your family soon. It will be memorable and is sure to land a spot in your regular dinner rotation. Enjoy!
