Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor or medical professional, just a mom and cancer survivor sharing what has helped me. This blog post is based on my personal experience and should not be taken as medical advice.
When I was 38 years old, I was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The cancer was in my lymph nodes around my neck, under my armpit, and next to my liver. It didn’t hurt at first, but as time went on and I was misdiagnosed, the pain started to increase. The pain would sting, and it felt like a jolt. The biggest mistake I made was not using red light during my cancer healing. My type of cancer greatly affects the spleen, and my spleen would ache so badly that I would have to lie in bed. I’m telling you all of this because red light therapy changed my life after going through cancer.
Red light therapy has been one of the most surprising and effective tools I’ve added to my routine this year. It’s gentle, it’s relaxing, and the benefits continue long after you’ve turned the light off.
In this post, I’m breaking down what red light therapy actually does, how it works, how it’s helped me personally, and the best ways to add it to your daily routine.

What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT) uses low-wavelength red and near-infrared light to stimulate your cells at a deeper level. This light boosts ATP production (your cell’s energy source), reduces inflammation, and helps your body repair itself more efficiently. This information came from the Cleveland Clinic.
Think of it as charging your cells the same way you charge your phone.
Is Red Light Therapy safe to use?
I was so afraid of red light therapy until I learned the background story behind it. If you are nervous about using red light, I highly recommend you read this article on The History of Red Light Therapy. Light therapy has been used for hundreds of years to help people heal from various ailments. Red light therapy is a targeted treatment option, and it’s extremely safe for all people of all ages, as well as pets.
❤️ Red light therapy has been around for over one hundred years, and between 1893 and 1895 Dr. Fenson used red light therapy to help heal people of smallpox and lupus.
💙 Blue light therapy is used on babies to help heal them of jaundice.
💜 We also know that ultraviolet light helps stimulate vitamin D in our bodies, which was discovered in 1935.
With red light therapy being utilized for many years, and with thousands of positive testimonials found all over the web, I think it’s safe to say red light therapy is a safe and effective way to help the body in a variety of ways.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy
Here are the benefits that I have seen, and what I’ve experienced personally:
1. Reduced Inflammation
This has been huge for me, especially after chemo. Red light helps calm inflammation, so your body can focus on healing instead of fighting back. We know that inflammation is a natural occurrence of the body, and some inflammation is good short term. However, when our bodies go into overdrive and are in an inflammatory state for too long, it can cause damage. With auto-immune on the rise, inflammation is sky-high, and red light therapy can calm the inflammation. I have personally experienced this because during chemo, my fibromyalgia decided to rear its ugly head. Though I am back in remission from that.
2. Increases Cellular Energy
When your cells have more energy, you have more energy. I notice clearer thinking, more patience, and a calmer nervous system on days I use it.
3. Supports Hormone Balance
Red light stimulates the thyroid, supports the adrenals, and can help stabilize mood swings, something I’m focusing on heavily as I navigate a future of perimenopause. If you have thyroid issues, try using red light on the neck to calm the body and regulate your system better.
When I’m close to the time of my monthly cycle, I use red light on my neck, chest, and abdomen. I’ll share more information about how I use red light below.
4. Helps With Skin Health
It increases collagen production, which helps with fine lines, scars, texture, and dryness (something I’ve battled this past year). I also use it on small irritations or rashes, and it helps them calm down much faster. Recently, I had a dry spot on my leg, which was very itchy and irritating. I massaged the area with coconut oil, did 3 treatments of red light therapy over the course of 2 days, and that dry spot was incredibly better.
5. Improves Sleep + Stress Response
Using red light in the evening signals your circadian rhythm to wind down. I sleep more deeply and wake up less often during the night.
6. Supports Immune Health
This is one of my favorite reasons: red light therapy lowers inflammation and boosts mitochondrial energy, giving the immune system exactly what it needs to stay strong.

How long does red light therapy take to work?
I felt immediate relief after the first treatment. After my cancer diagnosis, I struggled with extreme spleen pain. My spleen was very irritated from the cancer and chemo. When I first received my Lumebox red light therapy, I was so excited to see if it would help my pain. I promise you with my whole heart, I felt immediate relief after the first treatment! I was on cloud nine with the effects, and I’ve never looked back.
Because red light was so beneficial for me with my spleen, I was excited to see if it would help with my period cramps, and it has really helped! When I feel cramps coming on, I no longer take Tylenol immediately. I use red light on both red light and NIR, and I get relief. I’m faithful in using it up to 3 times per day, and I am a much happier girl.

When should I wear the eye goggles?
When you receive the Lumebox, it comes in a pretty case with a charging cord and goggles. These goggles do not need to be worn every time you use the Lumebox. I personally only use the goggles when the device is directly pointed towards my face. One thing I might add, when I use my red light on my face to help boost collagen to help fight fine lines and wrinkles, I always use the stand. I think the stand is a great purchase add-on, but not necessary; it’s just really nice to have.
When I use red light on my face, I always start with freshly washed skin. If you apply any skincare beforehand, make sure it’s a high-quality, non-toxic product. Red light helps your skin absorb whatever you put on it, so we want only the good stuff going in.

How often should I do red light therapy?
Lumebox comes with 2 settings: Red light and NIR. Red light is more surface-level, and NIR is for deep tissue and muscle use. You can even use both settings at the same time, or you can use one or the other.
When you turn on the device, Lumebox will automatically run on a 12-minute cycle. After 6 minutes, the device will beep, so you know you are halfway done.
You can use Lumebox in the same area every 6 hours, or 3 times per day. If I’m really sore or hurting, I am faithful to stick with this schedule. When I wake up struggling with a stressful situation, I will turn on the red light while putting on my makeup in the morning, and it gives me energy to get through the day. In this case, I will use the red light 2 times per day to help me get through the day.
If I need to use the red light in 2 areas or more, then I can do that with no issues, up to 3 times per day on those specific areas.
Red light therapy is incredibly safe, and it has become my go-to tool for addressing a wide range of needs. I truly love my Lumebox device and recommend it to every household. Additionally, it’s FSA and HSA eligible, making investing in the best even easier.
I hope my experience encourages you to explore red light therapy as a simple, gentle way to support your own healing and daily wellness.
