A Good Tea for a Cold

We’ve all been there- felt a cold coming on and needed a quick remedy for relief. Our grandmothers did everything from serving hot lemon water or tea to slicing onions and placing them in our socks. Maybe yours suggested a spoonful of honey for a sore throat. The point is that there are some great tried-and-true natural remedies for colds. My tea combines many of the traditional “cold-fighters” in one special drink! Mixing freshly squeezed lemon juice, whole ginger, matcha powder or green tea, and raw honey provides a potent boost of antioxidants and immune-supporting agents.

The Health Benefits of Matcha

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that Matcha is a daily staple of mine. Because of my cancer journey, I focus not only on healthy foods, but on things that are considered part of an anti-cancer diet. Matcha is one of my non-negotiables! It is essentially green tea, as it is grown from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. However, the growing process is slightly different, and as a result, it has quite a unique nutrient profile.

There are multiple health benefits of matcha in its pure form. Matcha is rich in antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage, and may help prevent certain diseases, including some forms of cancer. It can help manage and lower blood sugar, improve skin and gut health, and promote cognitive function. Other benefits include protecting the liver, promoting heart health, and even aiding in weight loss. If you don’t have matcha, use a good-quality green tea from your local supermarket.

You can find matcha powder at Whole Foods stores, some grocery stores, and online. Here is my favorite matcha powder, Jade Leaf Matcha from Amazon.

Make Immune-Boosting Tea

To make my anti-cold tea, you just need a few ingredients. First, start by juicing your lemons. Freshly squeezed lemon juice ALWAYS beats the artificial stuff, so make sure it’s fresh. I absolutely LOVE my beautiful Godinger Crystal Juicer from Amazon. It works like a dream and is a pretty accent in my kitchen.

Next, boil your water in this beautiful Retro Electric Stainless Steel kettle. You can find it on Amazon. It’s amazingly affordable!

You’ll want to slice a few pieces of raw ginger and put it in a glass measuring cup. Pour your hot water from the kettle over the sliced ginger, and add your matcha, honey, and cinnamon. Speaking of cinnamon, I use Organic Ceylon Cinnamon from Azure Standard.

Whisk everything well. Then add in your fresh lemon juice. Stir gently again, and let everything steep together for about 7-10 minutes (time can be adjusted to taste). Then pour into a mug. You can use a spoon to hold the ginger pieces, or pour through a sieve.

The zing from the ginger, the sharpness of the lemons, the sweetness of the honey and the warm cinnamon flavor blend together to give you the best morning, afternoon or evening tea! Now all you have to do is sit down and soak in all the benefits this drink has to offer. Enjoy by a warm fire or while sitting on a heating pad. So cozy and so good for you!

Alternatives & Swaps

I love this tea hot, but if you have young children who have a hard time with hot liquids, try what I’ve done for my kids. Steep the tea for about 3-5 minutes only, and let it cool slightly, or pour it over ice to create a refreshing, healthy “lemonade!” Adjust the taste for kids, maybe a little less ginger, a little more honey.

Swapping the matcha for a different tea is also an option. Try a peppermint tea bag for a soothing holiday drink, or as another favorite herbal tea for a cold. For colds, flu, sore throats, or general seasonal sickness, remember all the benefits matcha and green tea have to offer. My family loves my immune-boosting tea, and thinks its the all-around best tea for a cold. It tastes good, it makes you feel better, and supports natural healing. Give it a try!
