The power of prayer when facing cancer
When I received my cancer diagnosis, 3 days before Christmas December 2023, I was numb. I could hardly think, let alone pray. I was beyond devastated. Every phone call, every appointment made me cry. I had a friend at church that reached out, and she gave me the best advice, and I want to share it with you.
“No matter the numbness, no matter the pain, do not stop reading the Bible, do not stop praying.” – Naomi Cox

Give God glory in the good days and the bad
I clung to those words even when I didn’t want to read my Bible, but I did. I didn’t know what to pray, but somehow I found the words and did. This trial stretched me farther than I had ever been stretched. I asked my husband one night, “Why do I, out of all the people who don’t take care of themselves, who smoke and drink, eat crappy foods, why do I have to be the one suffering with cancer…” Do you know what he said? I pondered the words for weeks. He said, “To give God glory.”
He encouraged me to stop asking why and just praise God. Praise God for what He’s going to do in my life through cancer. It’s exactly what I did. I stopped asking why as much, and I decided to thrive under the cancer diagnosis. I set up goals for myself. What could I control? My stress, how I slept, what I ate, my thought life, my prayer life, my relationships, and lastly, how I could help others. I used my platform on Instagram and started sharing hope, a positive attitude, and strength to live a joy-filled life while battling cancer.
Prayers for cancer patients to bring vibrant hope during the hardest days
The prayers below were not my exact words, but they were the thoughts I focused on. Start each day by praying for God’s daily bread. Yes, we all want healing desperately so we can move on with our lives, but right now, start with today.
Throughout your day, pray one of these prayers. If you need more encouragement, watch a sermon to fill you with the courage to keep going. Here’s one I recommend: Strengthening Our Wavering Faith by Dr. Charles Stanley. At the end of this article, you’ll find more articles to help you practically get through your cancer journey. Keep checking back regularly, as I write more helpful articles about my cancer journey.

1. Prayer for Daily Bread and Daily Strength
Father, today I ask not for tomorrow’s strength, but for today’s provision. Your Word teaches us to pray for Your daily bread, and I come to You with that simple request. Give me exactly what I need for this day, whether it is courage, rest, hope, or endurance. When my mind runs ahead to the future, gently bring me back to Your presence in this moment. Help me trust that Your mercies are new every morning and that Your grace is sufficient for each step I take. Provide for my body, my emotions, and my spirit in ways only You can. Let me find peace in taking life one day at a time, knowing You walk beside me. Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow, so we focus on today with renewed strength, trusting the process and watching You work. Thank you for sustaining me moment by moment.
2. Prayer of Submission and Trust Under Trial
Heavenly Father, today I come before You with open hands, surrendering my fears, my questions, and my plans to You. Cancer is not part of the story I wrote for myself; it crushes my dreams for this life, yet I trust that You are still writing a story of redemption for me. Your Word says that You “work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose” (Romans 8:28), and I choose to believe that even here. Teach me to submit to Your will with humility and faith, even when the road feels uncertain. Let my life give You glory, not only in victory but also in struggle. Help me to worship You in the middle of the storm and to rest in Your sovereignty when I do not understand. May my testimony reflect Your goodness and Your faithfulness, even through suffering. I trust that You are near, and I place this cancer battle into Your hands.
3. Prayer for Learning to Heal God’s Way
Lord, You created my body with wisdom beyond my understanding, and I ask that You teach me how to steward it well as I walk through healing. Show me how to nourish myself through the foods You designed, bringing life and strength to every cell. Teach me to release stress into Your hands and to find peace through prayer and stillness. Guide me toward movement and exercise that restores rather than drains, strengthening me gently day by day. Help me cultivate relationships that bring encouragement, truth, and love into my life. Reveal any unforgiveness hidden in my heart and give me courage to release it, knowing that freedom brings healing. Let my healing journey be led by Your Spirit, rooted in wisdom and discernment. May every choice I make draw me closer to the wholeness You desire for me. I praise you for this body I live in. I know it needs nourishment and healing, and I will work to restore my health with the resources I have, while leaning on You to do the rest.
4. Prayer for Using Sickness to Encourage Others
Lord, even in my weakness, I ask that You make my life a blessing to others. Show me how this season of sickness can become a testimony that encourages those around me. Open my eyes to opportunities to serve, give, and love, even when my own burden feels heavy. Help me shift my focus from myself to the needs of others, trusting that generosity brings joy and purpose. Use my story to bring hope to someone who feels alone or afraid. Let my words carry compassion, and my actions reflect Your kindness. Teach me that even in suffering, I can be a vessel of light. May my life point others toward You, the source of true comfort and healing.
5. Deep Prayer for Healing and God’s Sovereignty (Jehovah Rapha)
Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals, I come before You acknowledging that You are sovereign over all creation, over every breath, and over every cell in my body. Nothing is beyond Your authority, and no sickness escapes Your notice. Your Word declares that You are the God who heals (Exodus 15:26), and I place my hope fully in Your power and mercy. I ask that the blood of Jesus would flow through my veins, reaching every hidden place, healing every cell, and bringing restoration where disease has tried to take hold. Let Your life-giving power renew my body from the inside out, washing away what is broken and restoring what has been weakened. As Psalm 103 says, You forgive all sins and heal all diseases, and I cling to that promise with faith. Whether healing comes through medicine, time, miracles, or unseen ways, I trust that You are working even now. Fill me with peace that surpasses all understanding and strengthen my spirit as I watch You work. Let my life be a testimony to Your unfailing love. I rest under Your authority, knowing You are both my Healer and my Shepherd.

These prayers during my healing from cancer were powerful weapons for me. They helped me know that I’m not alone, and God is fighting for me. I knew I could lay my head down at night and trust God as I slept. Psalm 4:8 says, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Rest in Him, trust the process, and watch Him work. Believe that healing from cancer is coming.
