Honoring The Sabbath – Meal Ideas
Sabbath. We all long for it. The idea of slowing down sounds wonderful, but actually living it out can feel nearly impossible.

Should Christians Keep The Sabbath?
For years, I’ve felt convicted to practice a true Sabbath. The truth is, I’m a “go” person. I have a lot of energy; I love being productive, and part of me feels accomplished when I’ve checked everything off my list.
But Scripture consistently reminds me that Sabbath isn’t just about taking a day off; it’s an act of worship. It’s choosing gratitude over striving. It’s trusting that God is my Provider and believing I don’t have to hustle every single day for Him to take care of my family. When I intentionally stop working, I’m declaring that my security isn’t found in my productivity. It’s found in Him alone.

Does Sabbath have to be on Saturdays or Sundays?
In Leviticus 23, God told Moses that the Sabbath was a day of rest and holy assembly. Holy assembly is another way of saying “going to church” to worship corporately (together). Sunday Sabbath is very hard for me because it is the least restful day of the week. After church in the mornings, I typically host lunch for my family, then take my kids to their life groups around town (which takes me 1 hour), and then turn around and pick them all up. It’s actually an exhausting day for me.
The Old Testament Sabbath was observed on Saturdays, and the New Testament Sabbath is observed on Sundays. I take the least legalistic approach and say this: whether the Sabbath is on Saturday or Sunday is up to you, because ultimately God wants you to take the Sabbath, period. During the school year, our family practices Sabbath on Saturdays. We go to church on Sundays.

How To Honor The Sabbath
Sabbath means “no producing.” I do not work; I do not cook. I use the first 6 days of the week as workdays. During the week, I prepare food ahead of time, and we have that one day to rest from producing. My kids who play sports still go to their meets or games on Saturdays; we all go, but the point for me is that we are not working; we are playing, fellowshipping, and enjoying each other in a more leisurely way. It’s perfectly okay to host friends and family on Sabbath as well, it’s actually

Biblical Eating – No Trendy Dieting
Carnivore. Plant-based. Keto. Paleo. Everyone claims they’re right, but who should we actually believe?
The answer is God. God mapped out the perfect diet for us in His Word, and it’s actually super easy to follow. The Creator of our bodies taught us how to eat, and biblical eating is the healthiest way.
Biblical Eating:
- Genesis 1:29 “And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’” This is all of our vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, nuts, and seeds.
- Leviticus 11 maps out what meat we can eat, clean versus unclean.
- Fresh-milled sourdough and unleavened breads were eaten daily.
- Olive oil was the oil of choice.
- Honey and dates were the sweeteners of choice (though we also use maple syrup and coconut sugar for their low glycemic index).
As you can see, this is very similar to the Mediterranean diet, but not exactly, because it allows unclean meats, including shrimp.
Eat a biblical diet and watch your health transform.

Sabbath Menu – Precooked Foods For Sabbath
I want to challenge you to go one full day per week without cooking. There is something incredibly refreshing about stepping out of the kitchen and resting. It’s nice to have food prepped in the freezer for this day, but here’s what I generally do. The day before Sabbath:
- I cook a chuck roast and make a salad. Sometimes, I’ll roast a few sweet potatoes as well.
- Head to Sam’s Club and pick up a fruit tray to go with a frozen pizza (this is reserved for super busy weeks when I need a shortcut).
- Cook a few of my favorite FROM FROZEN salmon fillets!
- Cook a whole chicken in the Instant Pot and serve with rice and peas.
- Cook a pot of soup for Sabbath, and prepare a salad and bread to go with it.
- Cook up a bunch of ground beef to make either taco salad or burger bowls.
- Meal prep a casserole like enchiladas or manicotti (I use the Jovial recipe on the pasta box), then bake it on the Sabbath.
These meals can even be prepared at the beginning of the month, so Sabbath is even easier to prepare for.
For breakfast, I will make scones, muffins, or pancakes ahead of time, along with an egg casserole or quiche. I have several recipes on my website.
Generally, we eat only 2 meals on the Sabbath: a late breakfast and an early dinner. Adjust this plan to suit your family’s needs.
And please do not forget dessert and snacks! We love making energy bites, pies, cookies, cakes, etc. I have a whole list of healthy dessert options; check them out HERE.

The world tells us we’ll fall behind if we stop. God tells us we’ll be restored. Maybe the healthiest habit we could build this month isn’t another supplement, another workout, or another productivity hack. Maybe it’s simply learning to rest in the One who never grows weary. “Trust God, and leave all the consequences to Him.” – Dr. Charles Stanley.
