Why Choose Grass-Fed Beef?

We make measured decisions when it comes to knowing where our produce, pantry staples, and yes, even meat, come from. Grass-fed beef is generally considered healthier than grain-fed beef. It’s lower in calories, contains essential Omega-3 fatty acids, and reduces the risk of notable diseases compared to other sources of red meat. Raised with little to no antibiotics or added hormones, and absolutely no grains, organic grass-fed beef is available at most major retail grocery stores; however, it can be up to 50% more expensive.

The solution? Buy in bulk! One option is to shop surrounding farms and consider purchasing one-quarter, one-half, or more of a cow. This month, we purchased half a cow from Chapel Creek Farms! We spent $1,572.75, and we’re beyond happy with the quality of the meat. If you don’t have access to fresh grass-fed meat in your area, you can purchase from Butcherbox (we still purchase from them on occasion). They sell top-quality, grass-fed beef and other meats!

Best Cooking Methods

To get the most fork-tender meat, cook a chuck roast low and slow. This is achieved in a slow cooker (Crock-Pot), in a Dutch oven, roasting pan, or even an Instant Pot. Cooking time will vary slightly, but a general rule of thumb is to cook for an hour per pound. I prefer cooking my grass-fed beef chuck roast in a glass baking dish. Serve it straight out of the dish, straight from the oven. My favorite glass cookware is the Pyrex baking dish with handles. It’s easy to grab and comes with a lid, perfect for storing or taking a long to a potluck!

How To Cook Grass-Fed Beef Chuck Roast

Grab a few kitchen essentials such as your cutting board and your favorite skillet, and you’re ready to make one of the simplest yet nourishing meals ever. This dish will come together in just a few hours.

cooking step 1:

Preheat your oven. Slice an onion, and peel two whole bulbs of garlic (yes, use that much garlic). Lay them at the bottom of your baking dish.

cooking step 2:

Add steak seasoning to both sides of your chuck roast. Bring your skillet to medium heat and add the butter to begin sizzling. Brown the meat on both sides until you notice a little crispness. Place your browned meat on top of the onions and garlic in the baking dish.

cooking step 3:

Deglaze your skillet by pouring in your broth and scraping up any leftover bits of meat with a spatula. Don’t skip this step! This is where a lot of the flavor comes from, and you want all of those brown, buttered bits going back into your baking dish.

*Note* If you do not have broth, you can simply use water and a seasoning packet like French onion soup mix.

cooking step 4:

Finally, pour all of that delicious broth with bits over your chuck roast and all around the bottom of the baking dish. Cover your dish with foil completely. Bake for 3 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender and falling off the bone. A good rule of thumb is one hour per pound of meat.

Dinner Is Served

After a few hours, your house will smell amazing, and dinner will be ready! What I love about this meal is how simple the ingredients are, yet the flavor is so robust. It’s a nourishing meal you can feel good about serving your family. Grass-fed beef chuck roast, when shredded, makes a great base for different meals. You can serve it over mashed potatoes or rice, make a French Dip, throw it onto a salad, top nachos with it, and so much more! The possibilities are endless. It’s also a great make-ahead meat, which you can freeze to have on hand for later meals. Enjoy!

Baked Grass Fed Beef Chuck Roast Using Simple Ingredients

By Aimee Guess
Grass fed beef has a richer flavor and is full of essential nutrients for living a healthy life. This beef chuck roast recipe is a simple baked roast that creates tender, flavorful shredded beef you can use throughout the week in meals like tacos, salads, burrito bowls, Asian bowls, quiche, and more.
Serving Size 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds bone-in grass-fed beef chuck roast
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 bulbs garlic, peeled
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 Tbsp steak seasoning
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • Slice the onion and peel the garlic, and lay them in a single layer in the bottom of a 9X13 glass baking dish.
  • Season the chuck roast on both sides with the steak seasoning.
  • In a large skillet, over medium heat, add oil or butter. Place the chuck roast into the skillet and brown on both sides.
  • Place the browned chuck roast on top of the onions and garlic.
  • Add the 1 cup of broth to the skillet and deglaze the pan. Use a metal spatula to get up any brown bits, then pour the broth around the chuck roast.
  • Cover with aluminum foil or a roasting lid and bake for 3 hours, or until tender and falling off the bone. ***Rule of thumb: Bake the chuck roast for 1 hour per pound.

Notes

Don’t have beef or chicken broth? This often happens to me. I use Just Ingredients French Onion Soup Mix, which is made using bone broth. I’ll whisk in a scoop of the powder into a cup of water.
***This meat is a perfect base for any recipe, including tacos, Asian bowls, salads, French dips, loaded baked potatoes, Chipotle-style burritos, pizza topping, and quiche.
